undergrad research opportunity for students

Application of Technical Skills to Research in Neuroscience of Aging

The Seattle Longitudinal Study, a study of normal human aging that has been ongoing since 1956, is seeking undergraduate research assistants. Our current research uses structural and functional MRI to examine the relationship between changes in brain structure and function and cognition that occurs with normal aging in midlife and in old age. Opportunities exist for dedicated undergraduates to gain exposure to novel neuroimaging analysis techniques (e.g. cortical thickness analysis, resting state network analysis, and graph theoretical measures). A technical background and a desire to understand the neuroscience of aging are required. Desirable skills include programming (in some language, ideally C/C++/Java and or scripting languages such as Python or R), familiarity with UNIX tools, and some background in statistics (e.g., linear regression). Students would be working with us to develop neuroimaging pipelines to process structural and functional data and conducting neuroimaging analyses using these pipelines and software developed by others.

We plan to involve at least two undergraduates in research in Summer, 2011, with anticipation of continuing involvement in academic year. We are most interested in students who can work with us for at least two years, so students who are in their first or second years are especially encouraged to contact us. Options are available for hourly wage or student credit, depending on the commitment of students and their fit/expertise with our project.

Interested students should contact by email to:
Dr. Sherry Willis (oldage@u.washington.edu) and
Dr. Tara Madhyastha (tara.madhyastha@gmail.com). Please provide a cv (resume) and a statement of relevant prior experience or coursework.

Engineering Professional Portfolio Studio, ENGR 498 C/D/E

All current and prospective engineering majors* are encouraged to
enroll in a one-credit course next quarter, in which you will produce
a portfolio that communicates your preparedness for professional
engineering. (*All engineering and comp. sci. students are invited to
enroll. Pre-major undergraduates intending to major in engineering or
comp. sci. are also welcome.)

Engineering Professional Portfolio Studio
ENGR 498 C/D/E, 2011 Spring
Section C on Tuesdays, 3:305:20 pm
Section D on Wednesdays, 3:305:20 pm
Section E on Thursdays, 2:304:20 pm
(Meeting rooms are not yet decided.)

Past portfolio studio students have described the sessions as uniquely
valuable for preparing for job applications/interviews and graduate
school admissions. They also said they benefited from the chance to
identify, reflect on, and integrate their engineering learning
experiences and professional goals. Here are some student quotes:

"Oh, yes. I would totally encourage people to do this portfolio
project, because sometimes we forget what we did, and we don’t have a
track back to see what we’ve been through, you know, since the
beginning of the college time…This portfolio is like online scrapbook
of your career."

"I can use [portfolios] in another application or another interview. I
mean I can always use information that I’ve already thought about and
written, maybe for grad school application or just be more prepared in
a job interview, I’ve already thought about what my strengths are and
how I can be a valuable team asset."

This studio is offered as a course meeting in five, two-hour sessions.
This is a one-credit course, and grading will be credit/no-credit. See
the web site for the current quarter's offering for details:

Embedded capstone with drones (Spring)

We will be offering the CSE 477 capstone (Digital System Design) again this
Spring. This class will count towards the degree requirements for both
hardware and software track CompE students.

The aim of the class is give students an opportunity to work on a full
quarter long project that incorporates hardware and software. Students are
welcome to propose their own projects, but this year's theme will include
working on the Parrot AR Drones. We have access to a number of these drones
as well as some of the firmware. The projects for this quarter will entail
adding new custom sensing capabilities, software, and firmware for outdoor
autonomous flight applications.

We used the AR Drones for EE 472 this quarter. In CSE 477, we are going to
dig much deeper into these platforms and build custom hardware and software.
